DescriptionThe seventh-grade integrated science course at Sycamore Junior High School will include skills, techniques, and lab activities to build a foundation in biotechnology.  Some of the skills and lessons to be included within the seventh-grade science course are: mass and volume of liquids, pipette use, making solutions and dilutions, chemistry of molecules, and gel electrophoresis.

Emphasizes student preparation in basic concepts needed to work effectively in a bioscience laboratory. Topics include laboratory math, basic chemistry of buffers, health and safety, metrology, quality control, biological molecules, gene expression, cell structure and molecular biology techniques. This course introduces students to basic biotechnology laboratory skills including basic separation methods, aseptic technique and documentation. Good communication and work-readiness skills are emphasized.

At Mira Costa College, upper division Classes are offered in mornings, so that students can work in afternoons/evenings. The bachelor’s degree has 95% job placement afterwards.

Biotechnology is incorporated throughout your entire high school career. You’ll only have to take 3 years of specific biotechnology classes, but supporting classes like product development, living earth, and ethics of biotechnology are also required.
